FLYING GLORY ("OL' GLORY")
It was said she had greatly loved her boyfriend
with
all her heart, but then he joined the Army, only to be killed by the
enemies
of America.
At the funeral the casket was draped with an
American
Flag. As she stood sobbing for her love a
wind
blew up from nowhere and the flag was pulled up and carried in the wind. It fell down upon her, draping her in it. Her face covered by the stars and stripes. As she stood there she had a vision of
Martha
Washington and all the wives and girlfriends of men who had gone off to
war
in defense of America and Democracy.
Their love was strong and now stretched down
through
the ages to grant her with powers and abilities to help protect America
for
“our men” to come home to. When the
vision
cleared she stood there in her Red White and Blue costume ready to
fight
America’s enemies wherever they might be.
But that was
all a
lie...
ELSIE CARMICHAEL STOKES
The patriotic story
released to the press by the American government about Flying Glory was
no where near
the truth.
Tomboyish Elsie Carmichael gained the Flying
Glory
powers as a teenager, and how they emerged is a secret that very few
have
known over the years. One of the few
was
her high school sweetheart and eventual husband Bill Stokes, who passed
away
a few years before our story opens. While
he was called up and battled on the war front in Europe, Elsie fought
as Flying
Glory both there and on the home front. After
the war, they married, but Elsie continued her secret life as Flying
Glory. As to the legend of a fallen
soldier beau, Elsie
never denied the mythical story of her origin, nor has she ever
confirmed
it. That said, Bill Stokes was the only man anyone ever knew of
that
publicly captured her interest.
After the war, many of the mystery men retired or were forced
underground by the
fears of the next decade. In that time, Elsie retired her mask,
got
married and eventually had a child named Annie. Annie's birth
also
propelled Elsie to reveal Flying Glory's true identity to the world,
wanting
to ensure it would be difficult for someone else to just step into the
costume
and assume her superhero identity.
From time to time Flying Glory was forced to battle once more, but for
Elsie she
no longer had the desire for adventure she once had in her youth.
Annie
learned of her mother's secret and powers and dreamed of one day being
able
to fly and become the next Flying Glory,... but it never
happened. This
among many other things drove a wedge between the two.
At
age
77 (though she appears no older then 60), Elsie finds herself in the
awkward
role of mentor. For the power of Flying Glory have finally
manifested
themselves... in her granddaughter Debra. Though she still has
her
own powers, this new role will prove to be both and emotional and
mental
challenge.
Debra may be about
the same
age Elsie was when her powers emerged, but the situation is extremely
different. Elsie became Flying Glory
in a country at war,
Debra's powers emerged at the end of a less tense era. Amidst
a backdrop of a changing America, Elsie
must
work to focus Debra on the seriousness of her gift and the magnitude of
what
she can achieve.
